My Smallpdf review turned out better than I expected. I tested it more than a year ago, and since then I keep coming back to this PDF editor. The reason is simple: it makes everyday PDF work incredibly convenient.

Its Chrome extension and Google Workspace integration let me work with PDFs without constantly downloading files or switching apps, while its AI and organization tools handle much more than basic editing.

But after testing 30+ PDF editors, I also found some clear limitations, particularly its annotation and PDF reading tools.

What makes Smallpdf special compared to other PDF editors is that it offers a Chrome extension that allows you to use its tools when you open a PDF in your browser.

What makes it different from many PDF editors I’ve tested is how easily it fits into a browser-based workflow.

Its Chrome extension lets you access Smallpdf when opening PDFs in your browser, while integrations with Google Workspace, Dropbox, and OneDrive let you work with documents without constantly switching between apps.

Smallpdf is primarily web-based, but it also offers Windows, iOS, and Android apps.

Would I Recommend Smallpdf to a Friend After Using It for 1+ Year?

I used Smallpdf’s online version when testing this PDF tool. With its intuitive user interface, it was super easy to access all the features I needed.

During the Smallpdf review, I had a feeling that it was more than just a PDF editor; it was rather a document management solution.

In terms of features, Smallpdf lacks advanced PDF reading (3.5/5) and annotation tools (3/5), but performs well in other areas.

Its user interface is simple (5/5), and it offers maximum security (5/5), affordable pricing plans for teams & individuals (4.5/5). This high rating for pricing also reflects that it offers one of the best free plans among PDF editors.

Is Smallpdf safe?

Because Smallpdf is primarily an online PDF editor, you are uploading documents to its servers for processing, so I looked more closely at what happens to those files.

After taking a deep dive into Smallpdf’s safety, I discovered that it is ISO/IEC 27001 certified, GDPR, CCPA, and nFADP compliant. Also, Smallpdf adopted a TLS encryption technology, which gives an additional layer of security to your PDF files.

What matters more to me is how long Smallpdf keeps the actual document. According to Smallpdf, files processed with most tools are automatically deleted from its servers after one hour. The exception is when you deliberately save documents to your Smallpdf account, where they remain until you delete them.

I also didn’t run into any negative comments on Reddit about Smallpdf’s privacy and security.

Based on what I found, I’m comfortable using Smallpdf for my everyday PDF work. However, there’s an important difference between Smallpdf and an offline PDF editor: your documents need to leave your device when you use its online tools.

Another area where SmallPDF worked great is its PDF conversion tools. You can convert PDFs into Excel, images, PowerPoint, and Word files. It works vice versa, so you can convert the supported file formats into PDF documents.

Smallpdf has massive AI features, as you can use it to chat, summarize, and translate your PDF documents. Also, it has a feature to generate questions about the PDF file you uploaded.

The chat with PDF tool helps to quickly extract the data you need from your PDF documents. Besides the answer, it provides suggested questions and uses references, so you can check the source text as well.

With the AI summarizer, you can effortlessly find key points within your PDF files. After you get the summary, you can ask follow-up questions to ensure you have a good understanding of the PDF document.

Smallpdf’s user interface is different from most of the PDF editors I tried in the past two years. In a good way.

I used the online version during testing, and it is user-friendly and has a clean interface. It was easy to navigate, and had zero learning curve.

Smallpdf’s free version gives you access to all the basic tools for document management. It covers compression, PDF conversion tools, passwords, PDF editor, and e-signature features. Nevertheless, the Free Plan has a daily download limit for these features.

Furthermore, you can access the AI-powered tools for up to 4 documents and 30 prompts per day. In addition, the free version covers access to Smallpdf’s mobile app with a daily task limit.

Pro Plan

The Pro Plan is excellent for professionals who need unlimited downloads and access to all the Pro features. The Pro version of Smallpdf starts at $10 per month if the annual billing is chosen. Alternatively, if you want to pay monthly, you can use its monthly plan for $15.

Using the 7-day free trial version, you will have a chance to test Smallpdf’s Pro features for yourself before buying it. The Pro Plan includes all the features in the free version without limits, plus you will access some more advanced features.

Such features cover text editing, strong compression, batch processing, OCR tools, and more. Besides the advanced features, there is no size limit, and you can use the mobile app without daily task limits.

After testing +30 PDF editors, I can say that Smallpdf offers a reasonable price for its features.

Pro For Teams Plan

SmallPDF has a dedicated plan for teams. The Pro for Teams Plan is perfect if you and your team need access to advanced features and faster support and want to save a bit more compared to individual subscriptions.

This plan has all the features included in the Pro Plan, plus you access centralized billing, member access management, and priority customer support.

You can get this plan for $8/month per seat if opting for yearly billing. In the case of monthly billing, the Pro For Teams Plan will cost you $12/month per seat.

Let’s do a quick calculation. Compared to Adobe Acrobat’s pricing, you can easily save approximately $12 per seat per month with Smallpdf.

So, if you have a team of 10 people, Adobe Acrobat Pro costs around $2,660 yearly, while Smallpdf’s Pro plan costs just  $960 per year for 10 users. This means that Adobe is almost three times as expensive as Smallpdf.

I don’t know about you, but it sounds like a fair price to me.
