Automatic time tracking: Rize offers automated time tracking that captures the time spent on your projects, activities, etc., so you do not need to use timers manually. You only need to start the desktop app, and Rize will automatically track your workflows and organize them into different categories, such as email, writing, etc., and sessions. Don’t be afraid; you can turn off automatic tracking anytime if you click on the power button in the bottom left corner, and you can rely only on manual time tracking.
Customizable categories: The way Rize categorizes your time spent into different activities and sessions is absolutely great. If you move your cursor to the specific activity, you will get a more detailed breakdown of your activity. I especially valued that you can create new categories for activities. With these features, you not only get the raw time tracking data, but Rize also analyzes and structures it into different sessions and categories.
Task and project management features: Rize is an ideal tool for agencies, as you can add projects, tasks, and clients as well, so you can seamlessly record every minute spent on a specific project or client work. It allows you to add icons, colors, select budget hours, and keywords so Rize can identify the activities that relate to this project.

If you want to try one of the paid plans, Rize offers a one-week free trial so you can try out its features and have an idea of what you pay for.
Rize’s Standard Plan is $9.99 monthly if choosing the annual billing. If you want to have monthly billing, it is $16.99 per month.

Benchmarks AI: The Benchmarks AI is one of the special features of Time Doctor. It helps employees to understand their overall productivity ratings compared to others. It uses AI to match you with similar profiles or lets you benchmark against all profiles across the platform.
Payroll software: You can set hourly budgets for each team member to keep payroll expenses under control. Time Doctor also makes it easy to track billable hours, ensuring accurate client invoicing and payroll calculations.
Employee surveillance features: I know, guys, this one is one of the main concerns when it comes to time tracking apps, especially Time Doctor. This Clockify alternative takes screenshots at set intervals and shows them in the Screencasts section of the web app, while monitoring keyboard and mouse activity. Nonetheless, you have the option to customize and minimize it or even disable this option completely.
Custom reports: Utilizing Time Doctor’s reporting feature, you can get a clear, detailed view of productivity and work hours. You can fully customize each report, which makes usage tracking and employee monitoring much more straightforward.
Mobile app: When it comes to the mobile app, I experienced some download trouble with the Android version. However, the iOS app, on the other hand, installed immediately without any problems and worked smoothly. The mobile apps are very simple and, as I mentioned before, work much like the desktop version: they mainly track time and don’t offer much else. This simplicity actually makes the app very easy to use.
My experience with Time Doctor

Overall, Time Doctor is a solid time-tracking tool. It delivers on its promise of detailed analytics, clear reporting, and straightforward payroll management.
While I found the interface clean and easy to navigate, some aspects, like customer support issues, occasional technical glitches, and limited admin controls over monitoring settings, can make it feel more invasive than necessary.
For teams that value transparency, data-driven insights, and features like billable hours tracking and the ability to set hourly budgets, Time Doctor can still be a practical choice, as long as you’re willing to fine-tune it to avoid crossing into surveillance territory.

Essentially, there are four pricing plans and two billing options. If you opt for paying annually, you’ll get a 17% discount. Time Doctor offers a 14-day free trial, so you can test it and see if it’s worth the money, but there is no free version.
The Basic plan costs $8 per user with monthly billing. If you choose annual billing, you’ll get a discount and pay $6.70 per user each month. This plan comes with automatic time tracking, project and task reports, and a timeline report. You’ll also get screenshots and online/offline activity tracking.
The Standard plan is $11.70 per user a month with annual billing, and $17 with the monthly billing option. This plan includes more advanced features and provides all the management insights not available in the Basic plan.

A good all-around Clockify alternative

Hubstaff is a robust time-tracking and workforce management platform with powerful features for improving employees’ productivity and project management.
Although Hubstaff’s features are not as extensive as project management software, they offer decent project and task management tools compared to most time tracking solutions.
Key Features

Time tracking: Hubstaff allows you to track time smoothly using its web, desktop, or mobile app. While the web timer is super stripped down (basically just start/stop), the desktop timer is more of a command center. You can add or edit time, create projects and tasks, switch between them, add notes, or even mark tasks as done. It offers an automatic tracking option that can start and stop the timer for team members based on preset rules, but it’s far from Rize’s automatic time tracking capabilities.
Project management tools: With this time tracking app, you can create projects, break them down into task lists, and organize them in a way that fits your workflow. You can see your tasks in a classic Kanban board, List view, or Timeline view. In addition, you can assign employees, manage tasks, set due dates, and even add workflow actions, which means you can automate certain task updates when something changes in the project. When it comes to project management features, Hubstaff is one of the best time tracking tools.
Timesheet app: This feature is useful for employee monitoring. You can view and edit your timesheet in multiple formats: daily, weekly, or calendar view, and all of them feel detailed yet intuitive. Adding time manually is quick and allows you to specify the reason or mark it as a work break. One small thing that I appreciate is that you can choose from different time zones, which can be crucial for remote team management.
Actionable insights: Hubstaff turns time tracking data into visual summaries: charts, percentages, and color-coded graphs that show things like work time classification, average activity, who your top performers are, and who might be slacking off a bit. Furthermore, you can filter everything by team, member, or custom date ranges, which helps to spot the patterns and get the accurate data you need.
Reporting features: One thing that really stood out to me during my Hubstaff review is how detailed and diverse the Reports section is. There’s a wide range of report types covering everything from time tracking to payments, budgets, invoices, and even job site visits.
GPS tracking: The Locations feature uses GPS tracking and geofenced job sites to automatically start and stop the timer based on an employee’s location. You can also set rules around them, like restricting time tracking to certain places or triggering alerts when someone enters or leaves a job site. On the Map, you get a live view (and history) of where everyone’s been.
Calendar: Hubstaff’s Calendar feature is great for workforce management. It lets you schedule, forecast, and handle absences so you can easily optimize your team’s performance.
Silent app: While the standard app requires users to start and stop a timer, the Silent App runs quietly in the background, tracking time, activity levels, app usage, and website visits without any user interaction.
Mobile app: I tried the Android version, which currently has a 5-star rating on the Play Store, and I absolutely agree with that rating. The app is fast, responsive, and very easy to navigate. It doesn’t lag or freeze, and it loads everything surprisingly quickly.
My experience with Hubstaff

Honestly, Hubstaff really surprised me. After spending some time with it, I’d say it’s a great tool.
I liked how much control admins have over how the software operates, which ultimately determines how invasive or flexible the tracking feels. The Silent App stands out as maybe the least intrusive option, providing a smooth way to monitor time without constant user interaction.
All in all, my experience with Hubstaff was really good. It’s a powerful tool that can strike a balance between invasiveness and effectiveness.

Hubstaff Free plan is available for one user only and includes limited time tracking, reports, screenshots, and client invoicing. This may be decent for solo freelancers, but it’s too limited for teams.
The Starter Plan includes the essential time tracking tools, such as a timesheet or a timer. So, it is only ideal for those who do not need any other features, just tracking the time & recording it in the timesheet. It is $4.99 per seat per month if you grab the annual plan. If you choose the monthly billing, it will cost $7 per month per user.
The Grow Plan is $7.50 per user monthly with annual billing. With the monthly plan, Hubstaff will charge $9 per user per month. This plan covers some more advanced tools, reporting, and one integration.
Hubstaff designed the Team Plan for larger teams that need more than just a simple time tracking app. You can access features for payments, scheduling, and unlimited integrations. It is $10 per user monthly in case of yearly billing. The monthly plan is $12 per seat per month.
Finally, Hubstaff offers an Enterprise Plan for larger businesses. Nevertheless, you can only choose the annual billing here, which will cost you $25 per user per month. Choosing this plan, you get a custom setup, account provisioning, and dedicated support for complex needs.

Best Clockify alternative for expense tracking

Harvest is a time tracking tool designed to help with expense management and tracking billable hours and employees’ time spent on projects.
Key Features
Time tracking: You can start and stop the timer for your activities with a few clicks. Once you start the timer, it runs in the background, and you can deal with your work. Once you have integrated Harvest with other tools, you can use their built-in timer, and Harvest will capture the time automatically. Apart from this, I did not see the option to capture time automatically without integrations or the browser extension.
Project management tools: Harvest has some straightforward project management features. With its advanced time tracking for projects, you can easily filter on the time spent weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly for each project. You have the same options for the tasks, the team, and even for the invoices, which makes project management very simple. The one thing that I disliked about the entire Harvest project management tool setup was the lack of different colored tabs.
Timesheet app: As for the timesheet, you can access this tool under the “Time” tab. By default, you will see your current timesheet, but you can switch to those that are pending approval, unsubmitted, or approved.
Invoicing Features: The invoicing features are incredibly easy to navigate, even if you have no prior experience with Harvest, like me. Users can create a new invoice, choose an existing client or add a new one, choose whether the invoice is for tracked time and expenses or a freeform invoice, and then decide whether it’s a single invoice or a recurring one.
Reporting features: Harvest lets you create instant reports on project budgets and costs, reports on the team’s tracked time and expenses, and export your data for sharing. The reporting and analysis tools of Harvest were some of my favorite features during testing because they are pretty detailed and offer many insights into the efficiency of the company and individual employees.
Client management: In addition to projects, you can also add clients with Harvest. It’s really simple; you only need to go to the “Manage” tab and add the name, address, and currency. Once you’ve done it, you can assign clients to projects and start tracking the billable hours.
Expense tracking: Using Harvest, you get to choose the specific project that the expenses were made for, the category of the expenses, such as lodging or meals, and the dates they were made on. On top of that, you and your team members can attach the receipt, which enables you to manage time and expenses much more efficiently.
Budget monitoring: By going through the Projects tab, you can see exactly what the total project budget is, how much of it goes to internal costs, how much is for billable tasks, and how much is for unbillable tasks. With these visual reports, you can keep a firm grasp on the amount you have already spent and how much you have left from the total project budget.
Project cost estimation: Harvest lets you create a project estimation for your clients. It is helpful for scenarios when your client asks for a detailed service breakdown with prices, and you want to provide them with style. Essentially, it looks like an invoice where you can add each service with prices, description, and additional information.
Mobile app: Harvest offers a mobile app for iOS and Android devices as well.
My experience with Harvest

Overall, I had a positive experience with Harvest, and I tried all the features. It is an easy-to-use time tracking app that you can utilize on multiple platforms. While its features are not perfect, the time tracking itself is very straightforward with this app.
In addition, the invoicing feature makes this time tracking app an ideal solution for client-facing teams who need a simple solution for invoicing and project budgeting.
One of the key features I missed during my Harvest review is the automatic time tracking. Harvest only allows this for specific apps that you can connect to Harvest.

When I looked closer at the free plan, I found that it gave me in-depth access to every feature, including creating unlimited project options and creating advanced reporting, but only for the first month. After that, I would be left with the basic free option, which allows me to bill clients, use the time tracker, and use some basic reporting features.
That being said, if you’re not a freelancer who can rely on this basic package, you might want to look into the other two billing plans, which include a lot of other tools.
The Pro Plan, which comes out at $11 a month if you pay annually and $13.75 a month if you get billed monthly, offers unlimited seats and unlimited projects.
All new users can experience this Pro Plan for free during the 30-day trial period, but once that period is up, you need to pay to access billable and cost rates for teams, team reporting, project and people imports, accounting and payment integrations, and even scheduled phone support.
These features all come in addition to the standard free features, which offer the basic time tracking and project progress tools.
I found that Harvest offers a 20% discount if you opt for the plan to be billed annually, as opposed to the regular price for monthly billing. If your team has over 50 members, or you run a non-profit, a university, or a school, then you can get a discount on demand.
The Harvest time tracking software offers the most bang for your buck through the Premium plan, which costs $14 a month if billed yearly and $17.50 if billed monthly.
With this plan, I got access to all of the tools included in the free and pro plans, but I also got to use the profitability reporting tool, timesheet approval, SAML-based SSO, saved reports, custom exports, requiring notes, and even custom onboarding for teams with 50+ members.

Harvest is a decent time tracking software. Although I was not impressed with its time tracking tool itself, it has some excellent expense tracking and invoicing features. Besides, I particularly found the budget tracking and the project cost estimation useful in my case.
